Make no mistake about it, Arsenal will go into Saturday’s clash at home to Burnley on Saturday determined to keep their three game Premiership win sequence going. Wins against Liverpool, Sunderland and last week-end’s controversial win against Stoke sees Arsenal only three points off the Premiership summit, and now with possibly their third opportunity to make ground on both Chelsea and Manchester United’s title aspirations. Defeats against those two clubs could have obliterated Arsene Wenger’s assault on a fourth Premiership crown, but such has been the unusual nature of this season’s Premiership title race, that the Gunners avowed stance to never give up, may ultimately prove to be rewarding. Dominant
Wenger will welcome back Denilson and Andrey Arshavin with Abou Diaby only rated as 50-50 with a knee injury. Alex Song starts a two game suspension after adding to his yellow card tally, and his absence in the Arsenal mid-field will be a loss that Wenger would rather not have had to deal with. After establishing himself as a first team regular Song has been a dominant force, key to both the Gunners’ defensive stability and just as crucially his support in attack. Ramsey support William Gallas remains sidelined and Thomas Vermaelen will have to wait to see if Sol Campbell will be his defensive partner at the heart of the Gunners’ defence, with Campbell’s niggling groin problem an issue that Wenger says will need to be checked on before Saturday. With Aaron Ramsey’s season cruelly cut down at Stoke – he has received over 50,000 messages of support from the Arsenal fans - the Gunners will want to give a good account of themselves against a Burnley side who, since the departure of Owen Coyle have found things more difficult of late. Hammered 5-2 at Aston Villa last week-end, Wenger knows that with the right attitude, professionalism and focus from his side, could see Arsenal go level with Chelsea and above United, with the required application of their stylish, free-flowing game. |
